Ditta & Sons
I was a student at Niagara College’s Horticulture Technician program from 1999 – 2002. Click this link to view the course outline. I enrolled in extra courses for landscape design and landscape technician. For my co-op placements during the summers, I worked in garden nurseries, Mullen Bros in Niagara Falls and Broadway Gardens (now Rice Rd Nurseries) in Niagara On The Lake, eagerly helping customers with their questions and offering advice on plant material. These jobs were one of my greatest tools and learning experiences. Actively being around the vast amount of plant material, I could study seasonal changes and flowering times for shrubs, trees, and perennials. It also helped me identify common problems people were having such as pests and diseases, or other general plant care and cultural issues. I’m also a member of the Niagara Falls Horticultural Society.
I then went on to do commercial and residential landscape maintenance for more than twelve years. During this time, my interest in the maintenance part of landscaping began to take form. What I like most about maintenance is the change that occurs from the beginning of the job to the end, and I can look back at my work and be proud. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, so my attention to detail really stands out. I also like the constant variety of work and being able to keep so many properties looking really nice each week. Certain aspects of lawn care can really only be learned with experience. Garden bed maintenance is another aspect of landscaping that Ditta & Sons excels in. Again, the amount of practical experience coupled with my college training brings a high level of value to each one of our clients.
My son, Joseph, is still young, but routinely joins me for work when he’s available. His early interest has surprised me and I’m really proud of him. Joseph has learned that if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. That’s something my father has instilled in me, and I feel it’s a great work ethic to live by. Joe takes care of the cleaning up by blowing off the hard surfaces, and he’s learning about equipment maintenance with a hands-on approach. He’s anxious about working this year at Ditta & Sons.
